Wing Chun history , another angle

Wing Chun history is shrouded in mystery, what we know about origin and development of this beautiful art cannot be considered as a fact. There are so many versions of wing chun history , some are contradictory at some points while others are completely different and unique, what is common for all these version is that in none of them can be found even one piece of information which would be the same and represent the starting point for future research . Every lineage has its own “history”, even more, every style from same lineage has somewhat different interpretation of the style’s origin and development. There is one more interesting fact about this matter, usually in historical research, as we go further in the past information and sources we have become less reliable. In Wing Chun history case information and sources are equally unreliable not matter of the time period, and it is the same for the modern period or even present time.
This mish mash of “histories” causing a lot of confusion for serious researcher, even more some someone who has just a genuine interest in history and development of the art.  Often, unbelievable things are presented as true facts, therefore we have people who lived more than 200 years and sometimes had supernatural powers . Different lineages and different styles have different time frames of their creation and development and sometimes it is not possible to determine a real life span or time frame in which some of the old masters lived and worked. Sometimes , depends of the version and lineage , old masters change roles so in one lineage one person is a teacher and other is a student while in other student becomes teacher of his teacher . Places of birth ,death , number of students , children , schools are impossible to determine , every lineage, every style has its own set of data and each and every one of them is true and original , often “only true and original”.
This situation causes not only a lot of confusion, it causes a lot of dispute and argument among wing chun practitioners .
There are several reasons for this situation and as we understand them better the more truth will come out and less confusion and reason for argument will exist.
Let’s start with a term “history”. We have to be aware that in Chinese traditional martial arts “history” has not a same meaning as it has in scientific circles , or in general . While “history” in general has a purpose to present true facts of the past events, based on the evidence and research, in Chinese martial arts purpose of the “history “ is different. History of one particular style is much more than presenting the facts of the past events, actually it is everything but that. In Chinese martial arts  term “history “ is used in absence of some better term , these “histories” are actually origin stories and they are rely on true historical events and figures as much as on myth and legends. Style’s history is an inspirational story for students, it is a source of ethical norms, often holds a hidden political message and at the end or maybe a the beginning its purpose is to give a style a prestige. As we can see it is everything but presenting true historical facts.
In old times people were mostly illiterate, whatever they needed to remember they memorized, written documents, especially about martial arts are very, very rare .
Sometimes, to memorize something easily people created songs and stories which in time , without proper explanation or because purpose for remembering was lost , became myths and legends .One other thing is important , on the south of China people use more than 20different dialects , often same tones have different meaning on different dialect and that made even more confusion in data transmission. We all know how memorizing and recalling memorized data can be tricky and big amount of information can be lost. Unfortunately that happened with wing chun history, great amount of information was lost or corrupted due to oral transmission.
It is important to know that real historical research regarding wing chun creation, origin and development, conducted by real historians and archeologists was need done . What we have as a history today are just origin stories, often not more than myths , Real scientific research includes certain procedures and validation process which allows gathering and presenting the facts with the best possible certainty . In wing chun case we do not have that and everyone is allowed to interpret, write and present information in any possible way for their own purposes.
Another reason for such confusion and diversity of information is a fact that many of the founders and first generation master of the art were involved in anti-government activities and were members of secret societies. It is commonly known how severe were punishments for such activities, therefore it is not surprising all the secrecy and intentional misleading of the government in any possible way. Giving wrong or partially wrong data could and did save someone’s life. In time, reason for such a behavior cease to exist but wrong information stayed without any more explanations. Covering names or pseudo names were commonly used as well.  Only people involved in some secret organization understand true meaning of special code names and identity of the people who used them. After one or two generations, especially after fall of the Qing dynasty people involved in such organizations died and the original names or meaning were totally lost, while cover or pseudo names were passed to the following  generations until they became the truth and that process is still ongoing even today.
Financial moment and marketing are maybe the most significant reason for such diversity in origin stories today. There are a very few people who do not claim their styles are the best, the oldest and the most original ones. For example if some master in the past became popular almost anyone who even spent a couple of weeks in training with that particular master later became a “grandmaster” and the most valued, often “close door” student. All these people have stories about their time spent with a master, different events, fights etc. If we gather all these stories together and count the time needed for all these events some teachers should have lived at last 150 years or more. Most of these people are telling the stories about “secret underground” fights and their tremendous martial ability, they never lost a fight . These “secret underground” fights stories are very convenient because there is no way to prove them right or wrong, we have to believe (or not). In this struggle to reach a wider market space we can witness how histories are changed over the years and how different people and different events replace previous ones.
Media also have tremendous influence on history, at last in creating popular believes among wide population of wing chun practitioners. Take Yip man’s movies for example, his historical role changed completely and form a man who had to escaped from Foshan in order to avoid execution he became a national hero , freedom fighter a person who can be compared with heroes of the past like Yue Fei.  In same manner, popular pulp fiction stories during the republican period made Leung Jan a hero and the best know wing chun practitioner of all times.
Current fashion in thinking leads to disregarding a true source of information which can be found. Lesser known lineages, like Law’s family art, “Snake Crane Wing Chun(SCWC)” and Poon Yu Village branch of the Cho’s family Yik Kam art, today named “Ban Chun Wing Chun”, still hold a precious documents and artifacts of the past times which can shed more light on true history of wing chun. For more than a century public opinion is influenced from only two sources , pulp fiction novels about Leung Jan and “history” written by his grand student Yip Man . Until recently most of the people believed , and on the west still believe that Leung Jan- Yip Man lineage is the only wing chun lineage that exist today .
Due to sudden popularity of Bruce Lee Yip Man’s style was and still is the most popular and the most influential Wing Chun style of all times. For a very long time only available history was the one written by Yip Man. Whole world knew about Leung Jan , his art , life (well, certain parts of his life), and for a long time it was wildly believed that Leung Jan’s –Yip Man’s lineage is the only one that exists . Yip Man shaped public opinion and his version of history educated generations of wing chun practitioners.
Although there are some independent researchers today who are trying to find more truth about real wing chun history and some of them are doing really good job ,still all these new data are greatly influenced with Yip Man’s version of history . Seems like most of the research goes in a way to prove Yip Man’s story true .
Even before Yip Man , Leung Jan was the most famous Wing Chun master , and while it was known other lineages exist, representatives of those lineages seldom showed them self publically , and no one taught openly besides Leung Jan’s descendants . Leung Jan, actually his teachers, Wong Wah Bo and Leug Yee Tai first and later Leung Jan and his students after him were the only lineage who taught openly and publically. For more than 150 years, Leung Jan’s art spread openly and shaped public opinion on wing chun as well as on the history of the art.  There are several reasons for this situation.
All wing chun came from the Red Boat Opera company. Who created it and when we probably never know but it was complete art in the middle of 19th century. We know there was more than a couple Wing Chun maters among Red Boats but only two of them taught Leung Jan openly while others were scattered who knows where and if taught they taught in secret .
In 1851 the Taiping revolution started, and in 1854, members of the Red Boat Opera led by Le Man Mao joined the revolution.  In 1855, Le Man Mao established a small kingdom in Guang Xi and the headquarters of Red Boat opera , Fine Jade hall was burned along with all red boats. Red Boat Opera was banned for next 15 years and members of the troupe involved in the revolutionary activities were forced to escape and spend time in deep hiding.  In 1864, the revolution was crushed.
The fact that Wong Wah Bo and Leung Yee Tai, from Red Boat, taught openly clearly states that these two wing chun masters didn’t have any connection with Taiping uprising so they could operate without fear or any problems from the government. Although, 15 years later opera ban was lifted and opera troupe started to work again, old rebels were still forced to hide and work secretly. Opera worked under strict government control and old revolutionaries were still wanted for their crimes against the ruling dynasty. They still couldn’t teach openly and they preserved their arts by passing them secretly , far from the eyes of the public and especially government. Leung Jan died at the beginning of 20th century and soon after he became a popular character of pulp fiction novels. In 1911 Qing rule was replaced and republic was established. In republican times Leung Jan’s popularity reached its peak and his descendants were the only who had public schools .Only publically known master of some other lineage was Yuen Kai San and he had only one student and he never taught openly . Republican period was a time of great political and military turmoil. Japanese were seizing a country piece by piece while Kuomintang and communist parties fought among them self. Second World War came in 1941 and after that civil war.  In 1949, Kuomintang moved to Taiwan and new China was founded.  During 1950s, there was a Great leap forward, Flourishing period until 1967,when cultural revolution started. A lot of traditional martial arts people were died during that time and a lot of them left China to Hong Kong. After 1967, almost all traditional martial arts practice in China was prohibited, and many masters were killed, with those masters , great deal of information about the past was lost. Not only traditional martial arts practice was stopped but also old tradition and customs and many documents were lost. What was saved, it was saved in Hong Kong because most escaped to Hong Kong before the revolution. Cultural revolution destroyed thousands of years of history , culture ,art and almost completely destroyed martial arts . Martial artists who weren’t killed and couldn’t escape to Hong Kong simply stopped to practice their arts, they couldn’t practice , not even in secret and they couldn’t pass their arts to the next generation . In 1979, China reopen the door to the world.
While in China people couldn’t practice wing chun (or any other styles), in Hong Kong, Yip Man using his connection in media created a popular story about wing chun . While other lineages of wing chun were still in hiding, Yip Man seized the opportunity and made his style the most popular one. Even more, Bruce Lee made Yip Man and his style internationally famous.
All these are reasons why we have only one sided view on Wing Chun history today. Although China is now opening to the world and kung fu is not prohibited any more, what was lost during the long decades after cultural revolution cannot be restored or found again.
On the other hand , in recent years , some old family styles decided to teach publically and not only they bring a diversity from a technical point of view they also hold a significant documents from the past , documents that can explain and give information about earliest period of wing chun history and also give more information about all these people who were forced to hide and teach their arts in secret .Most significant sources of information in recent years were and still are Snake Crane Wing Chun and Poon Yu village Cho’s family Ban Chun Wing Chun lineages.
What we need today is an independent research , conducted by professionals who will examine all possible sources of information and hopefully give correct and accurate information about history of the art we all love.

Snake Crane Wing Chun , a window in that past

Recently , a friend of mine introduced me with Wayne Yung , Hong Kong based Wing Chun teacher. Teacher Yung is representative of “Snake Crane” Wing Chun style . I have spent numerous hours in conversation with teacher Yung and learned a lot about him and his style . He is very polite and open person , willing to share his vast knowledge in area of Wing Chun and if I may say he is a perfect example of traditional kung fu teacher who possess all the qualities of the legendary sifus of the past .

On the other hand , he do not live in the past and his efforts are concentrated on the future of his style . Style its self is very interesting , at last it is for people who seriously research wing chun history and development . First , it is not only a separate Wing Chun style , actually it is completely independent lineage . Snake  Crane Wing Chun traces its origin to the Red Boat Opera Company . According to the creation story, like in so many other cases of southern martial arts, founder of the style is South Shaolin abbot Chi Sim. Historically , founder of the style is very well known member of the Red Boat Opera troupe and one of the first known Wing Chun masters whose existence can be verified , Sun Kam who is in wing chun circles better known under the name “Dai Fa Min Kam” . Sun Kam passed the his complete style to the Law family who kept style secret until recently . The reason why Law family kept style secret is due to their involvement in anti Qing activities and association with rebel organizations . Style was kept in secrecy for about 150 years when Master Law Chiu Wing a decade ago decided to teach his family art openly in order to save it from disappearance .

Law Chiu Wing , Wayne Yung's teacher

Technically , Snake Crane Wing Chun style is very interesting , for all wing chun researchers it is like a window in the past . Due to 150 years secret existence style remained the same , without changes . We can see first hand how original Wing Chun looked like in the time of its creation . Style utilizes snake movements which are soft and are used to trap the opponents attacks or defensive action , while crane aspect is used for structure in order to withstand any incoming force of any kind of attack .

Significance of the style is clearly shown by the fact that Snake  Crane Wing Chun style is included in cultural heritage of Hong Kong Teacher Yung told me that some students from Tainan came to learn his art .I think it is a great thing that people from Taiwan show interest in this old and interesting Wing Chun style. Hopefully , one day Snake  Carne wing chun will open  a branch school in Taiwan and enrich Taiwanese martial tradition and heritage.

Hidden treasure in a heart of Tainan , teacher Hong Guo Rong

I fell in love with Chinese martial art since early childhood . I loved Hong Kong movies and enjoyed reading stories about heroes of the ancient times and modern fighters . To my disappointment ,kung fu school in my country could not be found . Much later I’ve found “wing chun” school and some time after I have started to learn “original wing chun” , but that is another story . For a long time I wanted to learn White Crane and White Eyebrow styles , unfortunately ,at the time in my country and whole Europe ,only wing chun style could be found so I practiced what I could for a long time.
I came to Taiwan not knowing how lucky I was , there is no better place for kung fu addict like my self . At first all my time was dedicated to Wing Chun training , I had to start everything from the beginning and 3 years later I finally achieved what I always wanted , I have completed and fully understood the style .
At the time I’ve moved to Tainan from Taipei and my childhood wish appeared again. Since there is no White Eyebrow school in Tainan my focus was on finding White Crane school . That was no easy task , I have contacted some people , visited some schools but it just didn’t feel right . For more than a year I’ve practiced Baji quan. Baji is a great art and people there are even better , I really enjoyed my time there but my working hours changed so I had to quit .
One day I was reading about Mantis style school I wanted to visit and accidently found a name of White Crane teacher. His location is near my place so I asked my wife to make a call and ask can I visit him . He agreed and we went one Saturday . After 20 minutes ride we stopped in front of the hardware store. My father had a hardware store and this place reminded me at home. Behind the counter there was a man with a big smile who escorted us to the 4 th floor where the training hall is. That man was Hong Guo Rong , White Crane teacher who had my sympathies from the moment I saw him. We talked for a while and I saw all of his students were adults , people close to my age so I asked will he accept as a student . to accept me as student. He agreed and my training started.
Soon I realized this place was right place for me . There is only couple of students and they are all nice. Training atmosphere is relaxed and totally positive. It is obvious how much they love White Crane. They treat each other like a family .
Hong Guo Rong

Teacher Hong is totally different from all other kung fu teachers I’ve met. He is just an ordinary man, modest ,humble and quiet. He doesn’t attract attention, his behavior is just the opposite, he doesn’t want any. No one would ever guess he is one of the best kung fu teachers I’ve ever met, and I met a lot of them. He is a true master of the art. I am a beginner and I do not know much about white crane, but my Wing Chun is not bad and I have some skill. We touched hands and I felt his skill, he is so much better than me, his skill left me speechless .Like I said ,he is true master of the art .
As a teacher, master Hong is very strict, every little detail must be perfect. I know some teachers who insist on details but this is very different. While people who insist on details and precision usually try to hide their own incompetence and lack of knowledge , teacher Hong explains why is so important to do things in a certain way. Every detail has its purpose and martial usage, every detail is a piece of the puzzle or more precisely, piece of the White Crane fighting engine. Piece by piece , teacher Hong methodically builds students skill . Deepest foundation of the skill is knowledge understanding, everything is perfectly logical and can be explained and demonstrated to the smallest detail. Everything fits together perfectly , from completely physical part of training to Qi gong practice , all those things build a complete art , efficient and effective , not only in a combat sense but also in a sense of keeping a good shape and maintaining good health.

Ancestor altar

Teacher Hong has 40 years of martial experience , as a young man , he started to practice Tai Chi and followed his teacher for 10 years. At the age of 30 he started to practice Zonghe quan. Today he has more than 30 years experience in White Crane.
Teacher Hong with his teacher and kung fu brothers

When I asked teacher Hong why he accepted me as a student he said , you want to learn ,so I will teach you , simple as that. Teacher Hong believes kung fu belongs to everyone. Well , not to everyone ,he is very strict in selection of students. Only people with highest moral and ethical standards standards can be accepted as his students.

Teacher Hong's lineage tree and a table with his students names

Over the years teacher Hong had only a handful of students. When I asked him why he said ,people toady have no patience , they want to learn some fancy moves quickly , no one is prepared to spend several hours practicing basics every day until these movements become person’s second nature . Real kung fu requires dedication , hard work and deep understanding.
Teacher Hong’s school cannot be found on internet , there is no advertising , actually no one in Tainan knows about his school. He is happy to teach small group of dedicated people who really love the art and enjoy in every second of training .
I needed a lot of time and help from my club classmate to convince teacher Hong to allow me to write about him. Zonghe quan is a rare and beautiful art , and teacher Hong is a rare pearl among kung fu teachers, a person who really deserves to be known for his vast knowledge and even more for his extraordinary personality.

Deadly finger

Famous Taiwanese master od Monkey boxing brought his students of who one was a westerner, to visit another kung fu master who lived on a farm near Keelung city in North Taiwan . Master’s name was Chen Ching-Chan and he possessed a skill which falls in the category of esoteric arts and it is hard to believe in such things. If this story came from any other source I would not believe it , but the witness of this event had great credibility as a martial artist and a man who put a great effort to separate truth from the myth in Chinese martial arts .
After the was served , old master put the fuel oil on his right index finger and lit it and let it burn for a while. His right index finger was much shorter the one on the left hand and was knobbly, rough and a bit twisted. After the oil burnt out he put the wine on the finger and hold it in a flame of the candle until it became black . When he finished the procedure he touched one of the visitors and he jumped from pain. Next , he put more wine on the finger and without prior burning he lightly drew a line on visitors back , the skin immediately became red and slightly swallowed . Old man refused to show any combat usage of the finger , nor he wanted to show how techniques and training necessary for the development of this skill . He killed a man in fight 15 years prior to this event and decided not show any combat techniques or any skill which would lead to development of this odd skill .

It is hard to believe in this story , especially for the westerner who base his opinion on science and critical thinking . On the other hand event is a clear sign that there is much more in Chinese kung fu than most people are ready to accept .

Taiwanese masters 1- Cheng Man-Ching

Professor Cheng Man-Ching (1902-1975) is one of the most significant Taiwanese martial arts teachers of modern times. Many regard Cheng Man-Ching as the man who brought Tai Chi and Chinese philosophy to the West. He was not only a remarkable martial artist but also an accomplished painter, poet, scholar and doctor of Chinese medicine . Because of his skills in these five areas he was often referred to as the "Master of Five Excellences.
As a child he suffered from a head trauma and was in coma for a short time . To regain his motor abilities he was sent to calligraphy classes and soon he started to practice painting. He studied painting with with Prof. Wang Hsiang-Ch’ian . In 1913 he moved to Shanghai and continued his studies with well known artist Chang Kwong-Hong in Shanghai. In 1916 he to Hangchou where studied painting, poetry, and calligraphy with several prominent teachers if the time .In 1919 he moved to Beijing to finish his studies and soon after he started his academic career at Yu-Wen University where he taught poetry . In 1922 he became a professor of Chinese Ink Painting at the Peking Academy of Fine Arts and 3 years later he taught at National Chi-Nan University and served as Director of painting Department of Shanghai School of Fine Arts.

At that time Cheng developed a chronic lung condition and a local doctor suggested that he take up Tai Chi to remediate his condition. He Studied T’ai Chi Ch’uan with Yang Cheng-Fu for seven years . He also started studies of traditional Chinese medicine with Dr. Sung You-an. Additionally, he achieved mastery of traditional gynecology, and orthopedic medicine.

He published Cheng's 13 Chapters of T'ai Chi Boxing in 1950 . He started the Shih Chung T'ai Chi Association in Taipei and he was one of the first Chinese martial teachers who accepted and taught foreigners. As much as he left a strong impact on Taiwanese martial arts his work in the area of classical arts , mostly painting is more important. He was on of the most important figures in foundation of the Republic of China Fine Arts Society .He was a head of the Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition and was elected as a lifetime professor at the College of Chinese Culture.
In 1964, Cheng moved with his family to the United States, where he taught at the New York T'ai Chi Association

He returned to Taiwan in 1974 and passed away a year later .

Cheng saw Tai Chi as an embodiment of natural laws and as a path of human growth – a way to live, a way of finding meaning, balance and peace and he taught his students in that manner. He was one of the first Chinese teachers who came to the west and openly taught his art, not to mention he taught foreigners much before famous Bruce Lee .Cheng Man-Ching was open minded and he changed his art making it easier for practice and understanding . Through his martial art school and his painting he introduced to the west all the treasures of classical Chinese culture , philosophy and art . He laid a foundation for all the Taiwanese martial artist who later came to the west and spread traditional Chinese martial arts

Bobby Gabershek - everthing is Wing Chun

Everything is Wing Chun , even tactical military training including shooting , special forces training ,antiterrorist tactics ect. These words came from one of the most skilled and most knowledgeable martial artist and military instructors of modern times – Bobby Gabersek. Bobby came to Taipei last week to conduct a CQB seminar . We’ve met after he finished teaching for the day and stayed talking and me learning till late night. He brought his vast knowledge and excellent martial /military/combat approach to the group of very good, young Taiwanese combat enthusiasts .

Let’s say couple of words about Bobby’s experience .

Božidar Bobby Gabershek started his martial career in early 70's with Karate and Jujutsu in which he has black belt and he won several competitions .After completion of University studies he had started his military career where he served in Special Operations Unit, Counter Terrorist Unit, and as Intelligence officer .He achieved military rank - lieutenant . After military service her served in Special Police Unit and Dignitary Protection Unit . Parallel with his military and police career Gabershek constantly improving his martial ,weapon and tactical skills in a large range of  different areas . In 1978 He was one of the first Europeans who studied Chinese martial arts , several years later he became first European who achieved Master level in Traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu style . In 1997 Gabershek moved to Australia .In Australia he started his work on development of new approach to close quarter combat . His work along with work of several other experienced martial artists and military veterans become foundation of modern close quarter combat .
                                       Bobby Gabershek

Today Božidar Bobby Gabershek is Director and Head Instructor of CQB group international . Organization have training centers in Australia , U.S.A. and Thailand . CQB group international offers different kinds of training courses and security
services .

http://www.cqbgroup.co.th/

As a practitioner of traditional Chinese martial arts I have no interest in modern military training , I have experienced war in its worst and I had enough of that for  life. On the other hand I was really surprised when Bobby said modern military approach is no different from Wing Chun, a traditional Chinese martial style. At the time when Wing Chun was invented by the members of Cantonese opera trope , it has same purpose as modern CQB approach . Wing Chun can be considered as CQB of it’s time. Same basic principles of efficiency and effectivity applies now as they applied 150 ago. Weapons changed but people , their physical and mental abilities stayed the same . Same rules and same approach to close quarter combat can be applied in any given time with any given weapon.
I have never thought about this subject but it is so obvious that Bobby is right. It is interesting how one traditional martial style started his journey in Foshan 150 years ago , went to Hong Kong where it fell  into a hands of young Serbian military officer who modernized it , made an excellent tool for modern day military and police needs and then returned it to the people who actually invented the art .
Bobby significantly changed my martial arts perspective and the most praised moment was when he called me his student , it is a great honor to be called that from one of the best martial artist of today
