Sifu Wayne Yung – Snake Crane Wing Chun

Wayne Yung (翁國榮) is a Hong Kong martial artist, researcher and teacher of Snake Crane Wing Chun (蛇鶴詠春), and a disciple of Sifu Law Chiu Wing (羅昭榮).

Academic and Professional Background

Wayne Yung graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University in 1983, studying Civil Engineering with a specialization in Structures and Applied Mechanics. In 1987, he received a Master's degree in Computer Science from Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland.

In 1987, he taught Computer Science full-time at Hong Kong Baptist University while also teaching part-time at the City University of Hong Kong. In 1990, he joined the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).

Between 2009 and 2014, he was invited annually to conduct Kung Fu workshops for the joint MBA program of HKUST and New York University's Stern School of Business.

Martial Arts Background

Wayne Yung began studying martial arts as a teenager, practicing several Chinese martial arts as well as Taekwondo and Judo.

In 1976 and 1977, he placed second and third respectively in Hong Kong South China Athletic Association open Judo competitions. He later taught Judo and served as a referee before retiring from Judo in 1993.

In 1978, he began studying Snake Crane Wing Chun under Sifu Law Chiu Wing.

At that time, Snake Crane Wing Chun was taught privately rather than openly to the general public. Yung continued studying under Law Chiu Wing for approximately three decades.

Bringing Snake Crane Wing Chun to the Public

In 2009, Snake Crane Wing Chun began to be taught publicly, and Wayne Yung was appointed president of the Snake Crane Wing Chun Martial Arts Association.

In the same year, he established a Snake Crane Wing Chun training group for staff at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The group subsequently participated in martial-arts cultural exchanges and workshops for international HKUST students.

Yung also began systematically studying and analyzing the structure, principles and teaching methods of the Snake Crane Wing Chun system, applying his academic and technical background to the organization of the traditional material.

His objective was not to replace the traditional system, but to develop a clearer and more accessible method of teaching it.

Research into Wing Chun History

Wayne Yung has also conducted extensive research into the history and development of Snake Crane Wing Chun.

In 2014, he published the paper “Investigation on Some Forgotten Wing Chun Kuen History,” presenting the results of his research into the historical background of the system.

His research attracted attention from martial-arts researchers in Foshan and contributed to further investigation and discussion concerning the historical development of Snake Crane Wing Chun.

In 2017, he was invited to Spain to present his research into Snake Crane Wing Chun history during an International Wing Chun Day event.

Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage

In 2012, Wayne Yung submitted documentation concerning Snake Crane Wing Chun for consideration in Hong Kong's survey of intangible cultural heritage.

Snake Crane Wing Chun was subsequently included in Hong Kong's first inventory of intangible cultural heritage in 2014.

This was an important step in bringing a previously little-known Wing Chun lineage to wider public attention.

Writing and Media

Since 2008, Wayne Yung has worked as a consulting editor and writer for New Martial Hero magazine.

Beginning in 2014, he also contributed to the “Health & Kung Fu Talk” (武健講場) column in the Hong Kong newspaper AM730, writing about martial arts, health and Snake Crane Wing Chun. His articles remain available through the newspaper's archive.

In 2012, he was invited to work as a Wing Chun advisor for the film Troubled Treasures (亂世護寶), helping train members of the production team and actors. Snake Crane Wing Chun techniques and traditional kuen kuit material were subsequently incorporated into the production. The Snake Crane Wing Chun Athletic Association also documents his involvement with the film.

Snake Crane Wing Chun Today

Wayne Yung has held leadership positions within several organizations devoted to preserving and promoting Snake Crane Wing Chun, including the Snake Crane Wing Chun Martial Arts Association, Snake Crane Wing Chun Athletic Association and Snake Crane Wing Chun Yung Kwok Wing Athletic Association.

Through these organizations and his students, Snake Crane Wing Chun has expanded beyond Hong Kong, with practitioners and representatives appearing in a number of countries.

His work has therefore involved more than simply teaching the physical system. It has included preserving the lineage's traditional material, researching its history, organizing its teaching methodology and introducing a previously private Wing Chun tradition to a wider
